"A small piece of paper can mean the whole world." WOLS

Graphic collections store thousands of works on paper. In the Kassel collection alone, over 60,000 watercolors, pencil sketches, gouaches, copper engravings, woodcuts, posters, illustrated books, and much more are carefully preserved in the depot for generations. Each sheet tells a story.

Since when can pictures technically reproduced become? What fate did suffered Sarah Baartman, the so-called Hottentot Venus? How is it designed with Paolo Veronese the process of artistic idea generation with the pencil on the initially empty sketch sheet? What wig did he wear Louis XIVWhat did the architect see? Julius Eugen Ruhl on his trip to Italy? Why is the Melancholia Why is Albrecht Dürer so famous?

Works on paper tell stories and amaze visitors. In addition, they offer a special aesthetic pleasure - for the beauty of a single, perfectly executed line on white paper, the intricacies of an engraving, the velvety, deep black stroke of an etching, or the vibrant colors of a watercolor.

Paper works are extremely light-sensitive. Therefore, they are only displayed during special exhibitions. However, we warmly invite you to view our light-sensitive treasures up close without glass and frames in the study room of the Graphic Collection in the church wing of Wilhelmshöhe Palace - to marvel, learn, and enjoy.
