It is a bath that has never been bathed in: The Marble Bath in the Karlsaue served festive occasions and princely representation. Landgrave Carl had it designed and furnished by the French sculptor Pierre Étienne Monnot (1657–1733) from 1722 to 1728. Life-size marble sculptures, reliefs with motifs from ancient mythology, portraits of the Landgrave couple, and colorful wall coverings overwhelm the eye. The Marble Bath was intended to captivate the courtly visitors - and it still does so today, even though no longer are celebrated here. It is one of the most significant ensembles of baroque interior art north of the Alps.
The marble bathroom should - and can - impress.
