Establishment and first arrangement of the antiquities collection in the Fridericianum Museum

The intensive examination of the historical inventories of the antiquities collection and the associated archives of the "société des antiquités" (Society of Antiquities) has brought numerous insights into the antiquities collection under Landgrave Friedrich II in recent years. The first presentation in the Museum Fridericianum, opened in 1779, could be reconstructed. In addition, numerous exhibits (in original and in graphics/photos) have been rediscovered, which were previously considered lost.

Current research is dedicated to the Italian travels of the Landgraves Carl and Friedrich II, the scientific correspondence of the "société des antiquités," as well as the recent history of the Museum Fridericianum and the collection of antiquities.

Publications have appeared in the yearbooks of the MHK since 2010, in the anthology "On the way to the museum. Collection and presentation of ancient art at German princely courts of the 18th century" (2016), and in several essays. The special exhibition "Journey to Vesuvius" (2022), for which a companion book was also published, was dedicated to the journey of the architect Simon Louis du Ry to Rome and Naples/Herculaneum from 1753 to 1756.
