With expertise and passion, restorers preserve our shared European cultural heritage. They demonstrate how they do this at the 9th European Day of Restoration.

This year's theme is: "Up Close!" Under this motto, restorers from the painting restoration department of Hessen Kassel Heritage showcase how precise observation makes the relationships between object, time, and society visible.

Program

11-12 AM Restoration of a "cloth painting"
Around 1480, the delicate tempera painting by Hugo van der Goes was done on the finest canvas. To preserve it permanently, the delicate material was later glued onto a wooden panel. Removing the cloth from the wood and restoring it was the focus of a spectacular restoration in 1957.
With Anne Harmssen, Restorer for Paintings, Meeting Point Museum Cash Desk

12-1 PM Support and Ground as the Foundation of Rembrandt's Painting and His Contemporaries
What influence do the support and the ground have on the effect of a painting's color? We examine the various materials and techniques commonly used in 17th-century Netherlands' painting studios. Using selected works from the Old Masters Gallery in Kassel, we gain insights into the working methods of Rembrandt and his contemporaries.
With Dr. Thomas Krämer, Diploma Restorer for Paintings, Meeting Point Museum Cash Desk

2-3 PM Restored Original or Transmitted Fragment? Theory and Practice of Restoration Using Examples from the Kassel Antiquities Collection
Using the examples of the Athena Lemnia and the Kassel Apollo, we examine a dynamic restoration history. How is and was the aging traces, but also reconstructions handled?
With Dr. Thomas Krämer, Diploma Restorer for Paintings, Meeting Point Museum Cash Desk

3-4 PM Recognizing Watermarks in Works of Art by Albrecht Dürer
Why are watermarks in artworks on paper useful for restoration and art history? What challenges and solutions do we have in watermark recognition? These questions will be illustrated and answered with photo examples from the current Dürer exhibition.
With Ronald Reinke, Diploma Restorer for Graphics, Meeting Point Kirchflügel Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (left castle wing)
