Italian noble houses were already using the first fabric wallpapers in the 14th century. What has happened in living spaces since then is shown at the German Wallpaper Museum in Kassel. The huge collection includes over 23,000 objects - from the 500-year-old gold leather wallpaper to the latest non-woven patterns. This is not only interesting for private wallpaper fans: Monument preservation offices or castle administrations also receive support here when they want to identify and restore historical wallpapers.
The museum was founded in 1923 as a private initiative by wallpaper manufacturers. They wanted to document the tradition of their industry and exhibit wallpapers as art and cultural objects. Many merchants contributed valuable exhibits from their own collections.
Currently, a modern new building for the permanent exhibition is being built in Kassel. Therefore, the collection is currently only accessible via the online catalog or in special exhibitions.
