Planetarium

Planetarium interior with rows of seats facing a starry dome displaying constellations, including a lion, under a Milky Way backdrop.

Journey through the galaxies

The Kassel Planetarium, with 54 seats, is the largest in Hesse. In the diverse shows, young and old alike will get their money's worth. Whether a journey to distant galaxies, a visit to the ISS space station, or the exploration of the Martian surface. With the most modern projection technology, visitors travel in the "Planetarium" space shuttle to the stars and beyond.

The programs are aimed at educational institutions, astronomy enthusiasts, families with children, and anyone who has always wanted to explore space. Our visitor service will be happy to advise you on your perfect planetarium visit.

Originally, alongside the planetarium in the Orangerie, a permanent exhibition of the Astronomical-Physical Cabinet collection was also housed. Due to a necessary basic renovation of the building, the museum area is currently closed, and the exhibition can be seen in small special presentations at the Hessian State Museum.

The planetarium technology: Skymaster and Velvet Duo

The Kassel Planetarium operates with state-of-the-art projection technology. The centerpiece of the facility is the opto-mechanical projector Zeiss Skymaster ZKP 4. With the help of fiber optics, it creates a brilliant starry sky on the dome that can easily compete with the night sky in the desert: the projector can project up to 7,000 stars. The intricate paths of the planets are replicated by computer-controlled stepper motors - in the past, this was done using gears. Thanks to the digital elements, the presenters can project the starry sky of any date in the past or future onto the dome with just a push of a button.

For all the secrets of the starry sky that can only be discovered with the help of telescopes, the projection system Velvet Duo is available. It consists of two 180-degree projectors that can display any desired digital content across the entire dome.

The entire system is controlled by the software Powerdome. It allows for both complete live operation and automatic shows. If you want to leave Earth in the planetarium show and take flights through the endless universe, the 3D visualization software Uniview is used. Effortlessly, you can navigate with the spaceship Planetarium through our solar system to the farthest galaxies in space.
