Our museum library in the Chapel Wing of Wilhelmshöhe Palace has been a public reference library since 1931. The extensive current literature offering comprises about 140,000 volumes. Around 450 journals and continuous works are regularly kept.
The literature reflects the collection profile of Hessen Kassel Heritage:
- Art history
- Classical archaeology
- Applied arts and wallpapers
- Folklore
- Pre- and early history
- History of astronomy and technology
Acquisition focuses are exhibition and inventory catalogs, artist monographs, and reference works. Entries from 1997 onwards are recorded in an electronic catalog (OPAC); older collections are accessible via card catalogs. The specialized literature is located at several sites and can be viewed by appointment in the reading room in the Church Wing of Wilhelmshöhe Castle.
The use of the reference library is free of charge, borrowing is not possible.
The reading room is also the study room of the Collection of Prints and Drawings. Guided group tours are available upon request.
