Summer Serenade
Culture under the chandelier
5 pm to 6 pm
The string trio represents a distinct genre within the repertoire of chamber music for strings. Ludwig van Beethoven's 5 works for violin, viola, and cello (Opus 3, 8, and 9) are his first approach to string chamber music without piano. They were all composed before 1800 - the earliest, Opus 3, probably even in Bonn. Max Reger engaged with the string trio genre twice during his compositional career: in 1905 and 1915. The later of the two works, Opus 141b, can be understood in several ways as a homage to Beethoven, as Reger builds on Beethoven's variation technique. Furthermore, he published it, like his earlier work Opus 77b, together with two trios for flute, violin, and viola - a trio formation that was also led to its first peak by Beethoven.
