The World Heritage Site
On June 23, 2013, the UNESCO Committee in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, made the decision to include the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in die List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites . The ca. 560 hectare World Heritage Site is the first mountain park in the world to have been honored in this way. The UNESCO thus distinguishes the property as an outstanding and unique testimony to European architecture and garden art.
The beginnings of the design date back to the 1680s. The park stretches from the giant Hercules Monument over the 350-meter-long Grand Cascade system down to Wilhelmshöhe Palace and beyond. The garden is considered one of the largest in Europe and is a unique cultural monument.
The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe as UNESCO World Heritage Site
Commissioned by the federal state of Hesse, Hessen Kassel Heritage, as the supporting organization of the state institution Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, assumes the task of preserving the cultural heritage of the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel and shaping it in the present and future. One of the main objectives is to preserve the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe as a universally unique cultural landscape, allowing it to be experienced by future generations as well.
