Today, we are increasingly engaging with phenomena of non-normativity and their positions in art and society. Disability studies have also questioned the supposedly underlying concept of disability. Even for historical disciplines, these new approaches are increasingly being taken into account. The curiosity and growing thirst for knowledge in the early modern period also influenced the way people who did not seem to fit into the prevailing understanding of normativity were treated. Within court culture, as well as in artistic discourse, interpretations and approaches to interpretation were reflected that found their place not only within the context of cabinets of curiosities and wonder chambers.
The project focuses on the topic of "Dwarfism" from a cultural-historical perspective for a special exhibition in spring/summer 2027, aiming to present both general historical contexts and individual biographies.
The project is supported by the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.
