The Neue Galerie has been closely connected to documenta since the first editions of this world-famous exhibition series. The museum has repeatedly been one of the venues for documenta and has acquired numerous artworks for its own collection.
Since 2019, the Neue Galerie has been showcasing a comprehensive permanent exhibition on the entire upper floor titled "about: documenta," focusing on the major art exhibition. Here, the museum presents its documenta acquisitions and invites visitors to delve into the history and future of the institution.
The opening consists of a one-hour film collage featuring recordings from all documenta exhibitions. Individual cabinet rooms present the staging and backgrounds of the respective documenta through selected artworks, photographs, archival material, or videos. In the central rooms, the documenta artworks from the collection of the Neue Galerie are staged. In the "LAB," visitors can actively participate and share their documenta experiences.
The permanent exhibition is intended to make the development of documenta from a local art event to a global platform for discussion tangible - without providing a definitive interpretation. "about: documenta" sees itself more as an invitation to participate in the current and lively debates surrounding documenta.
